Houseboat Trip
The houseboat trip rocked! We did a TON of cool stuff. On the way to Sheep Island , we relaxed on the roof of the houseboat in the wind. The roof of a houseboat is amazing by the way, the wind blows the almost fresh Delta-water smell in your face, which is extremely refreshing even if it is . . . the Delta. It was evening by the time we anchored at Sheep Island, so we spent some time in worship and then headed off to bed. In the morning we woke up in the crisp morning weather. I (Daniel) was woken up by people shouting. I sat up and looked around only to see that there was a tanker in the delta. I was doing really well during the night, but seeing as I couldn’t fall back asleep, I got up and started getting ready for the day. When everyone was up, we had our morning devotion then went off to breakfast. After breakfast the fun really got started. Me and some of my friends went on Mr. Niece's water ski boat and I attempted to wakeboard . . . funny story. I got up the first time, and not knowing what to do since I wasn't expecting to get up, I fell face first and got a huge mouthful of the Delta water. After attempting many more times (11, ya I know, pretty sad) I gave up. Maybe another time. After we got back we had some lunch and we went banana boating. An awesome thing to do. We returned after a few more rides on the banana boat. Once we were back, we jumped off the houseboat, went swimming and just hung out. Jeremy caught a fish (using a hot dog of all things as bait). On Saturday night we had small groups and picked some verses and songs for the whole group the next day and then sang some before going to bed. I (Ricky) really enjoyed I getting to know a couple of people better and meeting some new people. We were awakened by PD's beautiful singing of camp songs, had chapel and breakfast. After packing up and hanging out a little more, we headed back home. It was a great trip, and I got to know a lot of new people and at the same time got to grow closer to my old friends. The whole weekend was really chill and the trip was just a great time to relax and hang out.

Student Leadership
“. . . I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” Ephesians 4:1
Jesus expected leaders to serve.
Jesus gave his disciples an image of leadership that we use as our standard for Student Leadership within our High School Ministry.
“Jesus called them [the disciples] together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:25-28
Jesus shattered what most people think leadership style is all about: being in charge. He goes even further to define true leadership as serving others. “Serving others” is how we define ministry. This type of servant-leadership is not attractive to most people. It goes in direct opposition to the attitude of running to the car to ride in the front seat or being first in line to eat or telling everyone what to do.
We’re not looking to fill our leadership team with the cute, fun and popular. We’re looking for people who love Jesus and are willing to make ‘servant-leadership’ the standard their lives reflect.
If you’re in 10th-12th grades and would like to be this kind of leader, pick up a student leadership application and turn it in by Sunday, September 9th.

Friday Night
Hume Lake is a different experience for me every time I go. This time was no different. Today (Friday) was an amazing day. We participated in the best recreation game today . . . The Great Race. It’s an awesome combination of 9 different events. Like: eating an entire lime, answering Bible questions, and spelling Recreation out on the ground by people lying down to form the letters. I swear, some of the things you’d expect to be easy turned into rocket science, no joke. Normally we have a morning chapel, but instead, all of the people who came with Saint Matthew got together and held our own chapel service. We got together, sang a few songs, and then people stood up and shared how Hume Lake has changed their lives. Many people shared about how they came to God this week, or about how they changed their views on Christianity. I think that there were two main points I picked up this week. The first was: God not only forgives all who ask for it, but He frees them too, from all past sins. Satan will try to drop guilt bombs on you, but when you realize that God loves you even more, imperfection and all, just somehow makes life even fuller. The second thing I realized was more along the lines of self-discovery. I realized that I am not looking for a religion, nor am I religious. I simply seek a personal relationship with Jesus. Of course, if one were to ask me what religion I am, I would say that I am a Christian, but I don’t try to be religious, just to grow in a relationship with Jesus. After everyone was finished sharing, we took communion and sang a sending song. We haven’t had today’s evening chapel yet, so I haven’t seen the closing video, and Chris Brown hasn’t spoken. He’s the best speaker I’ve listened to in my 5 years of Hume. He’s funny, and his messages are easy to connect to high school life. He is a great storyteller, and one of the funniest people I’ve heard. Overall, this has been one of my favorite Hume trips. Once again, Hume doesn’t fail to let me down. It has been a great week, and we (unfortunately) have to leave bright AND early tomorrow morning. Its sad, I’m gonna miss Hume, but it gives me something to look forward to next year.

Thursday Night
As someone who has been to Hume Lake many times, I am in constant awe of all it has to offer. It never ceases to amaze me all the things that the camp offers and all of the lives it changes. In morning chapel, a man named Luke Everett, (this year's misison speaker), shared his life story and his walk with Christ. Luke is 80 percent deaf, but despite that fact, he is one of the most astute followers of God that I have ever had the chance to meet. As Luke opened up his message, he told about his childhood struggles. When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not make it, his parents were praying for a change to come over him and that he would live. His parents went to the local church, and the pastor told his parents to lift up Luke to the Lord and put their son in God’s hands. Twenty minutes after this prayer, Luke’s parents received word that Luke was suddenly recovering and he was going to make it. This was not the only near death experience that Luke encountered as a child. He nearly died five times in the first five years of his life, but miraculously Luke made it through. Each story was compelling and very meaningful. When he was ten, his father decided that he would sell everything and move to Mexico to start an orphanage for deaf children so, the family packed up and moved to Mexico. His troubles only got worse. His family was constantly in need of support and after six months, the orphanage already had twelve deaf kids as well as eight of Luke’s family members. His family relied on the Lord more than I have ever heard of anyone doing, and God provided everything they needed. Later in his life, Luke lost two brothers, a sister, and had the orphanage burn to the ground. Despite all of these happenings, Luke stayed faithful because he knew that when he goes to Heaven he would see his family once again. He is one of the most amazing guys I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and I can honestly say that he has greatly influenced my life. Recreation today was super spirit day, and the theme was fantastic furry fuzzfest. It was quite the theme, and it consisted of Viking capes to cheetah fur. All the campers went especially crazy in an attempt to earn some extra spirit points for their team. There were many crazy relays and challenges. Recreation concluded with the team cheers and everyone went to lunch. Following lunch, everyone headed off to free time, then dinner, and then chapel. I feel that chapel tonight greatly affected the majority of the campers, more so than any other previous night. The speaker, Chris Brown, talked about the challenges of being a Christian and what it means to fully devote your life to Christ. A good part of his sermon was the difference between making Jesus your savior, versus having Jesus as Lord and what that means. He challenged all of the campers to turn away from being their own Lords, and have Jesus be the Lord of their lives. This hit home for many campers because of how difficult it is to not go the world’s way, but to go God’s way. Many tears were shed as campers realized what it meant to make Jesus their Lord and the sacrifices they would have to make in their lives. Chris gave everyone the chance to stand up and be redeemed in the areas in their lives in which they were mocking God, and to lift those areas up to Jesus. Everyone that stood stayed in the chapel and broke into small groups where they shared their areas of weakness with their counselors. It was a very powerful night for all of the campers and I know that it changed many lives forever. The night was concluded with a skateboard competition and a talent show in which various people from Saint Matthew played guitar and sang. At 10:15 we broke into small groups and talked about the day. Lights were out at 11:30 as we attempted to rest for the next day.

Wednesday Night
Hume Lake is an amazing place. I just got back from the canyons away from camp with the Exodus rock climbing crew. I am just so in awe of God and all God has done and will continue to do. His creation is beautiful; all of it from the mountains and lake to the students worshipping in chapel. I feel my heart appreciating the little things in life more and noticing how special and unique all God’s hand has made. It was awesome to see fellow students accept Christ into their lives last night and to see the transformation in other students attitudes and perspectives from the beginning of the week. God is awesome, and God is working in our hearts and minds. Today, a group of students competed in the Biathlon for our recreation teams. There was a guy and a girl runner and a swimmer for each team. I ran and had a lot of fun in the run around the lake. Then we had chapel with a speaker named Allison who discussed ways for us to defend our faith to people who may ask us questions about Christianity and why we believe in Christ. After her talk we had a choice of six seminars to attend concerning various subjects. I chose to go to a seminar by Chris Brown (this week’s speaker) on Freedom and Forgiveness. Chris talked about how to work on feeling free from our pasts and lift up our sins and distresses to God. His main point was that our Heavenly Father is here for us always with open arms; we are His. After lunch 54 students from Saint Matthew played paintball and others went on hikes or rock climbing with Exodus. Free time was also a chance to read, relax, or sleep. I’m excited for Campaign, the worship band, and their concert tonight and to worship our amazing God.

Tuesday Night
So here we are, Hume Lake, Day 3. It’s been a blast so far, but there’s still a lot more to come. In these past 24 hours, I think I’ve spent more time singing than I’ve spent sleeping. I wake up around 6:45 to get to the shower first then I’m on my way to Early Morning Worship, after that, there’s another hour or so of Chapel accompanied by more awesome worship. After Chapel, our teams assembled for Rec. and we once again sang our heads off for a few hours earning loads of Spirit Points. Later at evening chapel, the Hume Lake band, Campaign, lead us in absolutely amazing, rockin’ worship! I absolutely love looking around the chapel and seeing all the singing faces, hands lifted high, eyes closed, worrying about nothing but the Lord and the song. Every year, the worship up here at Hume Lake is intensely moving. Tonight to top it all off, Chris (the speaker) rocked our minds with an equally intense message about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego as they stood up to the frightening King Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 3). Chris asked us to stand up – to not bow to evil and sin – and put our lives in the hands of Jesus, just like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did. Tonight we had eight St. Matt’s students stand and entrust their lives to the Lord. The things that God does in this place never cease to amaze me!

Monday Night
Today we were divided up into our rec. (recreation) teams. This year’s teams are “Thorlak” (green shirts) and “Ingimar” (blue shirts). This week there are 1000+ students and adults attending Ponderosa Camp. Because of the number of campers from Saint Matthew, (110), we are split among a number of different sub team (28 total). With names such as Blarg, Neald, Olaf and Brad (to name a few). The competition games included Joust Do It, Slippy Reckie, Menneske Bowler and Frisson (goofy names and even goofier rec. games).
Forty of our campers ventured to the High Adventure course (15 more will go tomorrow) and went up the pampa poles (telephone poles), the climbing wall, the ropes course through the trees and the activity that separates the men and women from the boys and girls . . . the screamer. The screamer is a platform forty-two feet up on a rock. Campers are harnessed in and suspended by climbing ropes between two trees. They can face their fears by jumping forward or falling backwards and are caught on belay be a staff member down below. It definitely was high adventure!
